I Totally Made... er ... Wrote That....It's Nanowrimo Time!!

Have you heard of Nanowrimo yet? In English that means National Novel Writing Month, and that month happens to be November! The goal is to write an entire novel of at least 50,000 words in one month... yep that sounds completely crazy, and it is, but it's also a lot of fun. I found out about this two years ago and have done it the last two Novembers, but I have yet to win. The first year I found out about it right before it started and gave up pretty early on. Last year I was doing okay, I got to about 30,000 words, but then life got all crazy and I just didn't have time to finish. This will be my year though! Actually I hadn't even thought about it until a couple of days ago, but it's sucked me in again, and this time I'm determined to win.

They've already explained the whole thing on their website a lot better than I ever could:

What is NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 11:59:59, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. This approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that’s a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

In 2010, we had over 200,000 participants. More than 30,000 of them crossed the 50K finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.

So, to recap:

What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month’s time.

Who: You! We can’t do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let’s write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era’s most enchanting art forms! To give yourself permission to write without obsessing over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To stop being one of those people who say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” and become one of those people who can say, “Oh, a novel? It’s such a funny story–I’ve written three.”

When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins 12:00:01 November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at 11:59:59. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

This is a completely free, fun way to challenge yourself. If you find this intriguing at all you should definitely check out the website, there's a bunch of forums, videos, pep talks etc. You can also check out the calender for your region to see where the write-ins are if you want to get together with other wrimos.

Let me know if you decide to take on the challenge, I'd love to hear how your month goes.

32 Before 33 Thursdays -- Working on a Workspace

I didn't think I would actually attempt this one for quite awhile (or at all while living here). For seven years Jack and I owned our house in which I had my own office/craft space to do whatever I wanted, and I barely used it. I have no idea what I was thinking. Now that we're packed into this two bedroom townhouse I am dying for an office/studio/workspace. I've been desperately trying to figure out a space that I could use (do we really need that half bathroom? How often do we actually use the dining room? Does Riley really need a room, can't he just sleep on the couch?) Unfortunately all of my suggestions keep getting shot down.

But, all of my stuff is starting to take over the house so I need to do something. Which brings me to the most obvious, and yet least desirable part of the house: the basement.

I don't like our basement. I really don't. I try to avoid it whenever possible. It's not the worst, but I still don't like it. It's just so basementy. I have no desire to hang out in a space surrounded by insulation and cement. And I'm pretty sure there's spiders down there.

But, I'm determined to make this my pretty, creative space. I just have no idea how I'm going to do that. So, right now I'm trying to figure out the cheapest, non-permanent (we're renting) way to cover the walls and floors.

Any suggestions?

32 Before 33 Thursday -- Getting Started

Do you think I'm fooling anyone? Nope, didn't think so.

Well, this week hasn't been overly exciting on the goals front. I've gotten started on some of the ongoing goals, and have been gathering supplies for some of the others.

A breakdown of my progress:

- Exercised for 30 minutes: 4 out of 7 days...I'm working up to the everyday part, I don't want my body to go into shock, yeah that's it.

- Wore a dress once this week....This may be a weird goal for some people, but I seriously live in jeans. Trying to break out of my comfort zone though.

- Went to one new place this week....We've lived in the Twin Cities for a whole year already, and still have so much more exploring to do.

Supplies I have been gathering:

- Stopped by the library and picked up a Learn & Master guitar course....So I'm sure I will have learned and mastered the guitar in no time.

- Also picked up a novel to read....I already read a lot, but lately it always seems to be non-fiction. So, I'm forcing myself to occasionally stop working and just read for enjoyment.

- Art/Craft supplies for the art journal, paintings, knitting, and crocheting....Actually I already had a lot of these supplies but I've kinda "gathered" them into a pile, that counts right?

Alright, well this was my quick, vague overview of the last week. Future weeks will go a little more in-depth with the goals, but so many of them are ongoing and the plan is to let a few weeks build up and then do a post, does that make any sense?

Anyways, thanks for stopping by and I hope you're all having a great week!

32 before 33 thursdays

I'm jumping on the bandwagon.

I love these birthday goal lists. Actually I like lists in general, and I really like crossing things off of lists. But I really love these lists. I'm intrigued by other people's dreams, and I like seeing people accomplish their goals.

My birthday was a few weeks ago (July 5th) and I've decided to do my own. So, I'm getting all those random goals that have been running around in my head down onto paper and I'm actually going to work on them.

So, to make sure I do (instead of letting the list sit on the table until someone stuffs it into a drawer until next year when my birthday is approaching and I start tearing the place apart looking for it) every week I'm going to keep you updated on my progress in "32 Before 33 Thursdays."

I'm excited for the coming year and to get started on the list. Have you wrote a birthday goal list? What are some of your goals for the year?
